More Training Won’t Reduce Your Cyber Risk

There are simply too many chances for us to accidentally hurt ourselves or the networks on which we operate regardless of how much training we receive. What we need to do is to help users and customers keep themselves and their households and organizations out of trouble. How many times have you had to watch your company’s latest cybersecurity training video? An entire industry now exists to train us humans to be smarter in how we operate computers, and yet the number of cybersecurity incidents continues to rise. Are the hackers always one step ahead? Are we impossible to train? Or are we being taught the wrong lessons?

The human is indeed the weakest link in cybersecurity. But all too often organizations’ approach to mitigating that risk — other than taking the wise step of ensuring that they have the state-of-the art technological protection in place — is more training. It won’t suffice.

The U.S. armed forces and security agencies are a case in point. Should the military train its soldiers, sailors, generals, and admirals so they are less of a weak link for cybersecurity, as Admiral Sandy Winnefeld, the former vice chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, advises? Sure. Should the National Security Agency (NSA) do the same for its employees to keep secrets secret, as the New York Times indicates has been a challenge? Obviously.

But in truth, these parts of the U.S. government have been trying to make their workforces more cyber-savvy for years, and yet the hacks keep coming and succeeding — even against the U.S. military’s Joint Staff network, which the Washington Post reports was compromised in August 2015 via a measly phishing e-mail. Putting them through 50 more hours of cyber-hygiene training a year won’t help any more than warning our elders not to click on links in e-mails from strange addresses. We will never be able to train every e-mail recipient to discern what looks like a phish.

There is one area where more training would pay off: for CEOs and other senior managers — the people who are least likely to take training or take it seriously. Forty percent of respondents to a BAE Systems survey of senior managers in various sectors said they lack understanding of their own company’s cybersecurity protocols. But if you’re the boss, you’re an attractive target for crooks and spies.

Most importantly, the training can help leaders be much more effective in overseeing chief information officers (CIOs), and chief information-security officers (CISOs). With training, leaders can make more informed tradeoffs between purchasing the most convenient, accessible, and affordable technology (the CIO role) and keeping that technology and a company’s critical data secure (the CISO role).

When it comes to everyone else in the organization, however, the answer is not more training; it is to not trust humans in the first place. There are simply too many chances for us to accidentally hurt ourselves or the networks on which we operate regardless of how much training we receive. What we need to do is to help users and customers keep themselves and their households and organizations out of trouble.

The following proposals are all about companies’ being proactive with strengthening the security of their own networks and computers. They will make a company and its users more secure, regardless of whether or not they receive more training.

Know and prioritize your information. It may be the most common cybersecurity advice out there (even White House cyber coordinator and former NSA chief hacker Rob Joyce says so!), but you are nowhere if you don’t know your network and then prioritize what you need to defend. You can’t defend what you don’t know, and there’s no way to defend every file, database, and folder equally. So leaders should invest the time in knowing their organization’s network. It’s the first necessary (albeit insufficient) step to help your humans do their jobs safely while keeping the bad actors out.

Don’t let friends click links. In 2015, the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) decided enough was it enough: to prevent its users from clicking on potentially malicious links, it converted all incoming mail from non .mil domains to plain text. Now, there are no links to click. Inconvenient? Perhaps. But this is a case where an enterprise decided the risks of convenience outweighed the rewards, and DoD leadership took action to keep its employees from causing inadvertent harm to the military’s network.

Don’t just share information; block it. Take advantage of services like Facebook’s Threat Exchange that can feed threat information to perimeter defenses that can block attempts at malicious connections. This approach will never keep an enterprise perfectly safe, but it will reduce the risk of infection from those sources known to the community. And the unfortunate truth is that many, if not most, threats feature indicators that are known to various information security communities ahead of time.

Reduce your attack surface. Most of us at work use computers that have far too much capability than we need or use on a daily basis. With that capability comes increased risk due to all sorts of additional avenues of infection. If you can swing it, think about using something minimal like the entirely browser-based Chromebook, which can dramatically reduce the opportunities presented to an adversary or criminal to gain unauthorized access to your system. Its updates are far more regular and there is far less excess software to infect.

Reach for the cloud. Sophisticated businesses and enterprises are able to manage the security of their domain with a mix of security products. But many small and medium-size businesses don’t have the resources to do so. Meanwhile, companies like Google spend millions on trying to keep hackers out of their e-mail infrastructure.  If you are concerned you don’t have the resources to manage your own e-mail security, consider switching your back-end e-mail infrastructure to Google’s to take advantage of their investments in security.  It spends a lot of time hunting hackers so you don’t have to.

Finally, don’t forget the insider threat. Cybersecurity professionals spend a lot of time keeping the bad guys out. But sometimes, good guys become bad guys. In fact, IBM estimates that 60% of all attacks are from the inside. A human-centric approach to limiting damage from insiders might include creating a culture of mutual accountability (some might say tattletaling) at work. Additional checks on insider threats include segmenting a network so that only those who need access to certain data get access to that data and “water-marking” sensitive data with information as to when and by whom it was accessed.

It would be silly to aim for or promise perfect security. Instead, these suggestions are meant to help reduce the risk of an attack. Not all will be appropriate for every situation or user, but together, they go a long way towards giving the human a hand to improve cybersecurity.

Most top bloggers know how to write with HTML.

Why?

It allows them to do (pretty much) whatever they want to do with their content. These tags can give you the same freedom, too.

For example, if you want an image to stay in the center of your post, the right side, or the left side, HTML is the answer.

If you want to create lists quickly, add line breaks, or make block quotes on your own, HTML is exactly what you need.

If you switch the text editor in WordPress to HTML view rather than Visual, it will load much faster.

Just click the “HTML” or “Text” button to switch over. Here’s what the difference looks like:

It’s much faster to write in HTML because your hands don’t ever have to leave the keyboard. Plus, you’ll have total control over the structure and design of your content.

You can write HTML in any text editor, too. You won’t have to write exclusively in WordPress.

However, WordPress restricts some HTML, so keep that in mind as you become more skilled in coding.

Out of all Content Management Systems (CMSs) on the Internet, WordPress is the most popular.

In fact, according to BuiltWith, 53% of all sites built with CMSs use WordPress.

When you enter the wrong code into the post content area in WordPress, WordPress will convert it to plain text with confusing characters, like this:

&lt;bold&gt;word in bold&lt;/bold&gt;.

If you see these characters, it means WordPress has encountered an issue with the code you put in.

It’s also important to note that WordPress does not permit every HTML tag in a blog post. Codes like embed, frame, iframe, form, input, object, and textarea are not allowed.

But you can add buttons to the WordPress text editor using a plugin like AddQuicktag.

Once you familiarize yourself with HTML tags a bit more, this plugin will be a game changer.

Now, let’s get into the essential HTML tags that you need to write blog posts, starting out with lists.

1. Creating lists

To create lists, you can use the following tags: <ul>, <ol> and <li>.

Here’s what an “unordered,” or bulleted list, will look like in HTML format:

<ul><li>Green beans</li>

<li>Potatoes</li>

<li>Tomatoes</li>

<li>Chicken</li></ul>

This displays as:

  • Green beans
  • Potatoes
  • Tomatoes
  • Chicken

An ordered list looks a bit different. It will appear like this:

  1. Green beans
  2. Potatoes
  3. Tomatoes
  4. Chicken

To use numbers rather than bullet points, switch out the <ul> and </ul> for <ol> and </ol>. The result is a numbered list that looks like this:

It’s pretty easy to make a mistake when entering in codes if you aren’t careful. Be sure to close one tag before opening another.

You can also create nested lists within other parent list items.

This is especially useful when you need to list more than one category of items or topics at once.

Images are a vital part of any blog. But do you know how to use image tags to customize images?

2. Image tags

Images make your blog visually appealing.

Image tag codes aren’t handwritten very often, but they’re useful for customizing the size of images you add to your blogs.

Most people use the “Add Media” button if they’re using WordPress instead of writing out the image code.

The <img> tag is what defines images on HTML pages. They might look something like this:

WordPress requires titles for images, but not alternative descriptions. I recommend adding alt text to images as often as possible.

Alternative text takes an image’s description to the next level, making your image (and therefore your blog post) more likely to appear in the SERPs.

When uploading and embedding images into your blog post, be sure to add alt text regardless of the CMS you’re using.

If you forget to add alt text in the media library, you can always add it in the text editor later.

If an image is too small or too large, you can resize it in the text editor.

If an image has a width=”400” and a height=”700,” then just delete the height and change the width. The height will adjust according to the width you enter.

Next, I’ll go over how you can add in links with HTML tags.

3. Links

Links increase your search rankings, so you absolutely have to include them in your blog posts.

In HTML terms, links are often called anchors.

Here’s what the code for a link might look like:

<a href=”https://www.quicksprout.com/2017/01/06/8-techniques-that-helped-me-improve-my-writing-during-ten-years-of-blogging/” target=”_blank” rel=”noopener noreferrer”>10+ years of writing daily</a>

The title at the end of the tag is what describes or titles the link, like this:

The “a href” tag creates the hyperlink.

You can add a link to a single word, phrase, or image.

This produces a link like this: How to Become a Better Blog Writer in 30 Days. That link then directs you to a separate web page.

In this case, the link will take you to a guide that I wrote that can help you become a better blog writer in just one month.

The anchor text is the part of the link that’s visible. It could be a word, a phrase, or an image.

A text link will look like this: <a href=”http://websitelink.com/” title=”Description of the Link”>

An image link will look like this: <img src=”http://websitelink.com/image.gif” alt=”Ball” /></a>

You can also add some additional features to your link. For example, if you want the link to open in a new window or tab, it should look something like this:

<a href=”http://www.websitelink.com” target=”_blank” title=”This link opens in a new window/tab”>”Description of the Link”</a>

If your link doesn’t work, make sure that the URL you entered starts with “http://” and that you haven’t left out a quotation mark. And be sure to use straight quotes, not curly quotes.

Horizontal lines are another useful kind of tag since they break up your text.

4. Horizontal lines

A horizontal line creates a line that runs across your web page to break up different areas of content. It looks like this:

You can use the <hr /> tag to signify changes in the topic of your writing, to split up different sections of content, or to give a specific section more importance than others.

The line usually runs from the left to the right side of the page and is typically a light grey color. You can change the width of the line by adding to the subcommand like this:

<hr width=”40%”>

It’s a regular horizontal line tag with width=”%” added, and you can set the width to any percentage that you would like. “Hr” stands for “Horizontal Reference.”

Keep in mind that you can easily overuse these lines. Only use them if you really need them. Less is more.

Blockquotes are another way to format your text for readability.

5. Blockquotes

Chances are, you’ve probably quoted or referenced someone in a blog post before. I know I have.

As you know, it’s important to cite your sources when adding a quote.

It packs a punch to add quotes with a blockquote in HTML like this:

All it takes is a quick <blockquote> tag.

It should look something like this:

<blockquote>”Your quote here.” – Person who said quote</blockquote>

You can add a link to a blockquote by combining the two codes.

Blockquotes not only look visually appealing, but they also take your credibility to the next level by citing a source.

Heading tags are another HTML tag you need to know about.

6. Headings

Creating powerful headlines can be hard work.

But headings divide different sections of text for your reader.

I use them in all of my blog posts. They help structure articles and show readers where to look for certain topics.

Here’s a header from my blog post, “The Ultimate Guide to Writing Blog Posts That Rank in Google’s Top 10.”

There are six different heading tags that you can use on most sites: <h1>, <h2>, <h3>, <h4>, <h5>, and <h6>.

As each number gets larger, headings get smaller. For example, an h2 heading is larger than an h4 heading.

Different WordPress themes might use different headings differently, though.

You would typically use a heading as large as h1 for the title of the blog post. Subheadings usually consist of h2, while “sub subheadings” are generally h3 or smaller.

Keep hierarchy in mind when using headings and try to keep your styling consistent.

For example, if you decide that your headings are going to be h2, don’t write a random blog post with h3 headings.

Never put links in headings, either. They can easily get lost in the crowd. Be sure to only add links to sentences rather than headings and subheadings.

Now, let’s go over some other important formatting tags.

7. Formatting fonts

Bolded, italicized, and underlined lines of text are an easy way to add emphasis to words or phrases.

The original tags for bold and italic text were <b> and <i>, but the Semantic Web movement later made it more common to use the tags <strong> and <em>.

To bold text, write out the code <strong>”Your text here”</strong>.

Italicizing text might look something like this: “Italicized text puts a <em>great emphasis</em> on certain words.”

I don’t recommend combining bold and italics together, though.

You can also underline text, like this, with the <u> code. This can add emphasis or immediacy just like bold or italicized text does.

However, it’s easy for readers to confuse underlined text for a hyperlink, so be careful when using underlined text codes.

If you aren’t using line break tags, the readability of your blog could be better. Here’s why.

8. Line Breaks

Line breaks create a single space between certain lines of text like this:

You can add line breaks with the <br/> tag. These tags are self-closing, and writers often use them for poetry, writing out recipes, or entering addresses.

Here’s what a line break code might look like:

“This is a <br>

line break.”

Line breaks can also make your blog posts easier to read.

Which grouping of text did you enjoy reading more? You probably prefer the first one, right?

That’s because of the extra whitespace. Use it to your advantage!

Many people think that whitespace is bad, but it actually guides the eye to the next line of text, keeping pieces scannable.

Aligning elements is another simple way to keep your blog posts consistent.

9. Align elements

Nothing is more frustrating than trying to get an image to align, only to fail.

When you align objects in a synchronized way, your content will look much more sophisticated and organized.

I like to center certain images in my blog posts like this:

To specify a certain alignment, just add in the tag <p align=”center”> before the image or line of text you want to align, and then insert </p> in after.

The same applies to aligning text or an object to the left or the right.

This is a great tag to keep in mind if you’re ever having a hard time trying to align an image or line of text. It’s quick and easy to pop it right into the body of your blog post.

Conclusion

If you’re running any kind of blog, or if you’re planning on creating one, you can’t always depend on CMSs to customize your content exactly how you want it.

If you use these basic HTML tags, you’ll save yourself tons of time. HTML5 is incredibly popular, but you don’t have to be a coding genius or a professional web developer to use it.

In WordPress, the text editor will load much faster if you’re using the HTML version rather than the visual preview version.

Plus, if you know how to add in HTML tags manually, your hands never have to leave the keyboard. That’s huge if you’re already busy writing away.

Create lists with the <ul>, <ol> and <li> tags to list out different items. You can create either bulleted lists or numbered lists.

You can use image tags to insert photos by adding <img>. You can manually adjust the height and width of images to fit your web page, too.

Link tags, also called a href tags, are tags that insert links into the body of your blog posts. They allow you to link out to other content. You need those to improve your visibility online.

You can insert horizontal lines with the <hr /> tag. But remember: Be careful not to overuse these.

Format your fonts to be bold, italic, or underlined with <strong>, <em>, and <u>. Try to use one at a time to keep the body of your text looking professional.

Enter in line breaks by using the <br/> tag, which will increase the readability of your blog posts.

And align elements to appear in the left, center, or right of your web pages with the tag <p align=”left, center, or right”>.

You’ll take your blog post to the next level with these HTML tags, and probably save some time while you’re at it.

Think about it like you would as if you were prepping for a new job or job interview because, in fact, you are. It could be your new job, but a fun one which could be very lucrative if done correctly…
  4. Stay Organized – Do you your best to stay organized. I’ve struggled with sifting through mountains of printed paper and download files and let me assure you I wish I had organized things better in the beginning.

It’s a real pain in the neck looking for a website address or important bit of information and wasting 15, 20, 30 minutes or more trying to find it, or recreating the information because you can’t locate it.

You can give yourself a tremendous competitive advantage by adopting a learning mindset. Some people view their learning as stopping once they get out of school. To succeed online adopt the mindset of being a learner, if you don’t, be prepared to be disappointed. I can’t stress this one enough.

  1. Consider Affiliate Marketing – This is an easier route for beginners. Basically, you are promoting other people’s products and receiving a portion of the sales or a commission.

This is a good one to research online, but again be very careful, take it slow and don’t jump at every “shiny object”.

  1. Research & Pick A Product To Sell – Look for a product or service that you like, this makes it easier to sell as you’re more likely to both do the work and learn what you need to do to sell it.
  2. Testing – When you find a product test the waters.

Here’s how you might do that – Perhaps purchase Solo Ads, Banner advertising or PPC.

There are so many products and services to become an affiliate for that you can easily sign up for a huge number of products to promote, but narrow the field to one or two in the beginning, preferably one.

People often make the mistake of trying to promote too many things at once, become confused and fail in their efforts.

How many people learn to hit a baseball by having a professional pitcher throw fastballs at them. No one, that’s who!

So, master the skills you need with one product and then step up your game…

It could turn out that the product itself is not a great one, but don’t worry about that too much. Who hops on a bicycle and rides it perfectly the first time. Again, no one, that’s who.

So, don’t spend a ton of money on advertising until you’ve found a product that people want and you’ve begun to understand how to market and advertise it.

8.Be Passionate and Persevere! – There will be times when your passion wanes and you might feel like giving up, but be like the champion athlete who fights back when they lose a race to achieve victory the next time and cultivate perseverance.

Create a plan to promote yourself and your product using as many high payoff strategies as possible. If you have a website have an opt-in form for a newsletter – It’s imperative that you have an e-mail list.

Set Up A Separate E-mail Account – You may want to consider setting up a separate e-mail account for yourself and signing up for e-mail lists of products and services related to what you are selling. It’s a great way to see how other people are marketing and advertising but don’t fall victim to buying from them, treat it like research.

If you are setting up a website or selling products and services it’s important to get feedback from others about your efforts. Does your site look good? Is it optimized for conversions, etc? You could ask family and friends or seek coaching to help you with getting quality feedback …

Keep in mind that how we learn is by making mistakes and falling down, it’s how we learn to get back up… Think about a child, that’s how they learn to walk…

  1. Be Prepared To Fail & Keep Going – Be prepared for failure, it’s no big deal, in fact, it’s a good thing, it’s a learning experience. Look at what you can improve, do this repeatedly and you are sure to succeed. In fact, when people ask about the secret of success it’s actually what I’ve just written. It’s trying new things, falling down, learning from mistakes, and getting back up repeatedly – Successful people persevere despite setbacks and challenges, unsuccessful people stay down when they fall down.

So, I’ve given you some tips and pointers to keep you moving forward on your quest to make money online. It is absolutely possible to do. 8 Old-School Blogging Tactics That No Longer Work

You feel misguided.

When you started your blog, you thought you could just follow in the footsteps of your favorite blogger, right? Just publish great content and maybe spend some time on social media and you thought the readers would come.

But in reality, you find yourself grinding.

You stay up late after your 9-5 to write articles. You hustle for every single visitor. And you feel as if you’re spinning your wheels in a rut, not getting anywhere with your blog.

You wonder if it’s your writing. You wonder if it’s your topic. You wonder if maybe blogging just doesn’t work anymore.

But I have good news for you:

It’s not blogging that doesn’t work anymore. It’s these old-school blogging tactics that somehow still pop up online as effective methods of growing your blog.

Instead of throwing in the towel on blogging completely, throw in the towel on these outdated strategies and start upping your game (and your traffic) with what works today.

Tactic #1: Hoping “Great Content” Will Save Your Sorry Ass


You’ve been told that “content is king” and “if you build it, they will come.”

So you’ve spent countless hours building a hub of awesome content on your topic, and you just know it’s what your target audience is looking for.

Once upon a time, that might’ve been enough. People would’ve found you and spread the word about you.

But these days, everyone is writing amazing content. There are hordes of carefully crafted, ruthlessly researched, expertly written blog posts on every topic.

Readers won’t come looking for you. You need to go looking for them. You can’t do that if all you do is write, write, write.

What to Do Instead

Instead of spending all your time writing and publishing content, you need to spend more time getting that content in front of readers.

In fact, Derek Halpern suggests you should only spend 20% of your time creating great content, and 80% of your time promoting it.

So build relationships with influencers. Develop an outreach strategy to get links and shares. Repurpose your articles for maximum exposure.  

If you don’t, it won’t matter how amazing your content is; you’ll keep struggling to build an audience.

Tactic #2: Guest Blogging on Huge Media Sites for Traffic


It was July 2015, and I was so excited.

I had only launched Unsettle six months prior and Huffington Post accepted me as a contributor.

So I got to work. I researched Huffington Post’s business section to find the perfect topic. I stayed up late to write an article that I thought would resonate. Then I logged into my contributor dashboard, loaded the article, and pressed “publish.”

The next morning, I woke up early, excited to check my stats, and … crickets. I saw maybe 20 visitors from the article I’d worked so hard to write.

What happened?

The problem is that these huge media publications keep on growing in size and staff. And the more they grow, the less chance you have of drawing significant traffic from them. After all, it’s much harder to stand out when they publish thirty or more posts alongside yours.

Sure, if they happen to feature your post prominently on their front page, you may go viral and draw more traffic than you can handle. But you’re more likely to lose the traffic lottery than win it.

When it comes to guest blogging, you have much more reliable options.

What to Do Instead

Guest blogging is still hugely beneficial for bringing in traffic, email subscribers, and social proof.

But instead of targeting huge media sites like Huffington Post, you should target more specific, topic-based blogs. For example,if you’re a finance blogger, instead of guest blogging on MSN Money, you would target Budgets Are Sexy or The Penny Hoarder.

These blogs usually have large, engaged audiences specific to your topic.

Also, these kinds of blogs are often run by a single influencer. Guest blogging for them will help build your relationship, which can lead to them sharing your posts in the future. (This could end up sending you more traffic than the guest post itself.)

As for those huge media sites, the only reason to write for them is if you’d like to add your logo to your “featured on” list. You may not get a ton of traffic, but having written for these big websites does lend you credibility in the minds of many readers.

Tactic #3: Asking Readers to “Subscribe for Free Updates.” (Is It 2009?)


Listen, you can no longer expect people to give you their email in return for “free updates” or your “free newsletter.”

Yes, you’re supposed to grow your email list, but if you’re asking for emails without giving anything in return, you’re ignoring an important psychological societal norm: reciprocity.

This tactic may have worked in the past, but everybody knows the power of email marketing today, so every blog, website, and shop is vying for your visitor’s email address. You’ll see pathetic opt-in rates if you’re not offering anything concrete.

What to Do Instead

Instead of just asking outright for email addresses and hoping your readers are generous enough to cough them up, you need to give them something valuable in return.

That means creating an opt-in offer your visitors can’t refuse.

An opt-in offer is a free resource you provide related to your topic that you give away in exchange for an email address to incentivize email subscriptions (and rapidly grow your email list).

With the right opt-in offer, you’ll see your subscription rate go from a measly 1%–2% to an encouraging 5% or more.

Tactic #4: Trying to Build an Ad-Driven Media Empire


Back before the days of affiliate marketing and product creation, there were the days of advertising — one of the only ways bloggers of yesteryear could begin to monetize.

The idea was that you’d build a huge site with lots of pages ranking in Google, slap ads on them, and you’d see profit.

Now, even back in the day, the gains you’d get from ads were modest. Even then, you’d need a whole lot of people clicking your ads to make a decent living. But if you had enough pages ranking for profitable keywords, you could make it work.

These days, it’s even harder than it was before. Not only do you face a lot more competition, but most people have developed “banner blindness,” which means they pay so little attention to the ads on a page that they don’t even notice them.

Advertising is an ineffective (and unprofitable) means of monetizing your blog. Fortunately, you have much better options.

What to Do Instead

Blogging is more of a viable career than ever before.

But now, instead of relying on tacky display ads to earn you pennies for the hard work you do, you can earn much more by creating products, offering services, or selling online resources and courses.

Turn toward treating your blog as an actual business, and away from scammy monetization practices like advertising.

Tactic #5: Lurking in Comments Sections Looking for Traffic


Back in the day, the way to guarantee traffic was to leave comments on articles posted on other blogs in your niche.

If you left your comments in enough places, they could bring you significant amount of traffic. You’d just leave a link in the URL section of your comment, and wait for the traffic to roll in.

Why do you think you still see so much spam in comment sections? Because this used to work like gangbusters.

But now this no longer works. Nobody has time to comb through the comments section of an article and click the links to see if commenters have a blog they might want to follow.

What to Do Instead

Commenting on other people’s blogs is still an effective way to build relationships with other bloggers. If you connect with other bloggers in their comment sections enough, they learn your name and will recognize you.

Then, if you want to send them a pitch, or a link or share request, they will already have warmed to you. They will be a lot more receptive.

Of course, leaving half-hearted comments (“Nice article!” “I totally agree with your fifth point!”) isn’t the way to do it. You’ll actually have to read their articles and share which insights you gained from it, and if you have any additional ones to offer, mention those too. (Just make sure you don’t outright contradict them, if you want to build up your relationship with them.)

Tactic #6: Writing Y.A.R.P (Yet Another Roundup Post)


It seems as if every time you open your browser, you see another headline like this:

“32 Productivity Experts Reveal Their Morning Routines!”

This type of post is called a roundup post, where the blogger has reached out to several influencers and bloggers, asking them the same question to use their answers in an article.

This used to be an excellent strategy for getting your blog on the map. The influencers who contributed would get a backlink and a feature on your blog, and in turn they’d share the article with their social media followers.

But because they worked so well, everybody started doing them. So influencers’ inboxes are now flooded with the same old roundup questions from everybody and their dog. If they even respond with an answer (because a link is a link), they’re far less likely to share it today.

What to Do Instead

Featuring influencers in your niche is still a good way to put your blog on the map. Instead of asking a generic question and making a list post out of the answers, you can take one of two other approaches:

  1. Using influencers as case-study-style examples (without bothering them for their input). This is what I did with my Buffer guest post that ended up being one of the top pieces of content on the Buffer blog that year.
  2. Getting extremely creative and interesting with your question. Instead of just asking what the influencer’s favorite superfood is, get more creative to capture their interest and rise above the rest of the roundup questions in their inboxes. Bonus: this also appeals to more readers.

Both of these options allow you to reap the benefits of a roundup post without ending up on influencers’ hit lists (or being completely ignored).  

Tactic #7: Writing for Rankings (Rather Than Readers)


Not that long ago, bloggers could “game” the search engines.

You could write short, keyword-rich articles for your blog and actually rank. The more content you published, the more keywords you had the opportunity to rank for.

In fact, I wrote a blog called Suburban Finance, and because I wrote several articles about buying a house, I ranked in the top 50 for the search term “house.”

True story.

But since then, Google’s algorithm has become much more savvy.

See, Google’s business model relies on its users getting the search results they want — relevant, valuable content about whatever topic they’re searching for. So instead of valuing content based on quantity, Google uses measures of quality.

That means that it looks at factors like:

  • Dwell time” (how long a user will spend on the page)
  • Bounce rate (the percentage of users who leave your site after visiting one page)
  • Content richness (the length and depth of the search result)

These factors all show Google (and other search engines, not that they matter) that the result they displayed to their user was relevant and valuable.

What to Do Instead

Cranking out five 300-word blog posts per week so you can rank does not lead to relevant or valuable content.

Instead of becoming a content mill, hoping to rank for keywords, focus on creating quality content for the keywords you’re looking to rank for.

You must write for people. And people are looking for answers. When you write detailed, long-form content, it is more likely to have the answers they seek.

Tactic #8: Being a “Jack” of All Social Platforms (Instead of a Master of One)


It used to be standard practice to have a social media presence on every platform possible to cover your bases. But that’s no longer effective.

With the introduction of algorithms for many social platforms, your posts reach fewer of your followers than ever before, so blasting your blog posts to every social media platform won’t bring you much traffic at all.

If you have 1,000 likes and follows on your Facebook page, that used to mean you promote your blog posts in front of most of those followers, but now only 6% (and often far less) of your fans will even see your posts in their newsfeeds.

Facebook isn’t the only social platform that has taken this approach. Instagram is the latest platform to follow suit.

To get your posts in front of more people on these platforms, you need to drum up engagement so the platform trusts that your followers want to see your posts.

But that’s nearly impossible to do unless you know the platform intimately and build up a strong presence. And it’s tough to do so if you are spreading yourself across every social network out there.

What to Do Instead

Focus on just one social media platform and promote your articles more heavily.

The only way to get more people to see and like your posts on social media  is to develop a deeper understanding of each platform and post on a regular basis so you can conquer those prohibitive algorithms.

How regularly?

CoSchedule says that it depends on the social platform, but here’s a quick breakdown:

  • Post to Facebook 1–2 times per day
  • Tweet 15 times per day
  • Instagram 2–3 times per day

Develop a deeper, more intimate knowledge of the social platform to truly benefit from social media marketing.

Wake Up and Ditch the Outdated Blogging Advice  

I bet you’ve thought it.

I know I have.

“If only I’d started sooner.”

You know, back when professional blogging wasn’t so popular. Back when the blogosphere wasn’t more competitive than the restaurant industry. Back when all you had to do to get traffic was post on Facebook every time you published a new post.

It’s tempting to write blogging off as one of those things you had to start back before it became popular.

But I have good news …

You can still make in the blogosphere. You just have to ditch the old-school blogging tactics that no longer work and lean into the new strategies.

What Is IFTTT?

IFTTT stands for If This Then That and it’s a completely free way to make you more productive and time efficient by automating some of the most mundane parts of your business.

The tool uses Recipes (also known as Applets) to connect different apps and tools to create workflows. Think of them like a chain reaction; when you take an action in one tool, another happens in the tool that it’s linked to.

For example if you were to active this Recipe, every time you used a specific hashtag on Twitter, like #work, that tweet would directly post to Facebook:

While this may only seem like a few seconds, it’s one of those tasks that have a positive impact on your entire workload after a few uses. And if you combine 10 to 15 of these across your workload the time savings really come into play.

The amount of tools that can be combined, for lots of different purposes, is almost limitless and applies to all industries and niches.

Just off the top of my head you can use Recipes for: Google Docs, Evernote, Pocket, Gmail, WordPress, YouTube, Medium, ESPN, The New York Times and all social media channels. And that’s really just scratching the surface.

This means you never have to repeat a repetitive task that you don’t want to. So, think of it like free outsourcing for the tasks you hate.

The IFTTT Recipes I Use To Run A 7-Figure Blog

If there’s one lesson I’ve learned over the years it’s this:

The bigger your blog the harder it is to remain productive.

You’re constantly bombarded with new and different time sucks that drain your energy and pull you in lots of different directions. So, I’ve been using IFTTT to help alleviate a lot of that stress.

In this section I want to show you the true potential of IFTTT by sharing with you the IFTTT recipes I use to automate my day-to-day marketing activities.

RSS Feed + Evernote = Automatically Curated Content

Every month I published an Income Report Roundup from various bloggers that have been tracking their income process. But what you probably don’t realise is that I don’t do any of the research for that.

Instead it’s all handled by an Recipe that delivers the information I need directly to my Evernote at the end of every month.

To do this I create an If This that states when a new article is added to my RSS feed with the keywords Income Roundup it triggers the process:

I then connect it to my Evernote to create a note with links to all of the relevant articles that gets delivered to me at the end of the month.

Meaning I save literal hours trying to find content with the relevant information.

WordPress + Evernote = Backup Blog Posts

It’s important to have backup copies of your blog posts. In the case anything goes south with your site, or hackers deleting all of your content, you should always have a fallback option.

For me this is using IFTTT to save my latest posts on WordPress to my Evernote database.

The first step is to connect up your WordPress account to IFTTT, and then select the New blog post trigger.

After that all you have to do is connect your Evernote account and have it save automatically once it goes live. Giving you a backup copy of your posts without any extra work at all.

Luckily for you that comes as a pre-made Recipe that you can set up in just a few seconds right here.

RSS Feed + Email/Text = First Comment Exposure

Blog Commenting may not give you the best return from SEO, but it does give you an excellent opportunity to get your site some much needed exposure.

The best way to do this is by being one of the first comment on a new post.

To do this is simple. First head to the site you want to comment on and at the end of their URL type /feed/. For example:

www.nomadicmatt.com/feed/
www.fluentin3months.com/feed/
www.deutschified.com/feed
www.expertvagabond.com/feed/

Then you add that URL to the RSS feed as the If This trigger. It’s worth checking the site actually has the RSS feed before you do that, mind you.

Depending on the importance of the site you can set this up to either email you instantly, or to text directly to your phone.

When there is a big, high traffic site I get a text directly to my phone so I can jump on and capitalise no matter where I am. But if it’s a middle of the road site I’ll get an email update and see to it as soon as I get chance.

Competitor Emails + Evernote = Deep Competitor Insights

In the blogosphere email marketing is super important. It’s at the backbone of every sale, every interaction and it’s where I make a lot of my money.

The same goes for your competition.

That means if you can study their emails you’re able to see exactly who they’re targeting, what they’re promoting and how you can steal some of their ideas.

This also serves to make you aware of affiliate options, copywriting lessons and when your competitors are about to make a large sales push.

To set this up, choose your email client as the If This trigger and choose the New email in inbox from option:

And then use Evernote as the Then that trigger to have these emails archive themselves directly into the app.

You could even log everything into a Google Spreadsheet so you have a database of relevant marketing emails to search at a moments notice 😉

IFTTT Tutorial: How To Use IFTTT

Learning how to use IFTTT is really easy!

You have two options when you’re using IFTTT; you can either use pre-made Recipes from developers, or you can create your own.

In my IFTTT tutorial I’ll show you how to create a tailor made Recipe to make your workday more productive.

Firstly to create your own Recipes you need to go to this link here, which will show you a screen like this:

What you’re going to do first is create the if this and then the then that portions of this by connecting two tools.

Let’s say you want to take a specific action every day that you keep forgetting about. Well, you can create an IFTTT Applet that will send you a reminder every day.

Firstly click on the + this section of the text and choose the date and time service:

You’ll then be able to choose the event that happens to trigger this process. For this example I’m going to go for Every day at.

I can then set the specific time that I want to process to be triggered at:

So as of 09:00 every morning this IFTTT will be triggered to take an action. But, what action is that going to be? Well that brings me to the next step…

You’re not going to need to click the + that section of the text:

And from the tools list you can choose where you want to be reminded. For me, email is always the best place for me to get a reminder, so I’m going to link this to my Gmail account.

But you could set it up to send you an SMS, a new note in Evernote, an alert on your calendar or any number of places that your attention will be focused.

On the next page I’ll select the action I want to take, in this case send me an email:

Then I can fill out the detail I want to receive. For this example let’s go for following up emails that I’ve sent out that need following up.

Hit Create action and there you have it. The next time 09:00 rolls around I’ll get a lovely little reminder in my inbox.

This is a simple example but the system is exactly the same for any Applet or process that you want to create. If you find an inefficiency that can be fixed, you can probably create a solution for it here.

But, if you don’t want to create your own Recipes, you can always use the pre-made Recipes people are already using…

Increase Search Traffic With These 3 Internal Link Building Strategies

Internal link building is the most powerful SEO tactic you are not using.

It’s a tactic used by most well-known websites (i.e. those already ranking in the top 10) for one simple reason: it has the power to boost rankings like crazy.

Don’t believe me?

I am going to show you how one site used internal linking to jump from position #29 to #4 in a matter of weeks.

And another that went from position #33 to #5.

Crazy!

It’s also extremely quick/easy to implement and carries (almost) zero risk of Google penalties.

In fact, it can be implemented pretty much overnight.

What is Internal Linking? (And Why Is It Important)

There are two types of links:

Internal and external.

Basically, an internal link will take you to a web page or resource on the same domain, whereas an external link will take you to a resource on a different domain.

Let me illustrate with an example…

Here are two links from my list of the best link building tools:

Link #1 is an internal link (i.e. it links to another web page on my domain) which takes you to my ultimate guide to Scrapebox (btw, this currently ranks #2 for “scrapebox”, so you can already start to see the power of internal linking!).

However, link #2 is an external link (i.e. it links to a page on a different domain) as it takes you Patrick Coombe’s website.

Simple, right!?

Both internal and external links are important for different reasons but, as this post is about internal links, here are 3 reasons why internal links matter:

#1 – Internal Links Help Google To Discover Your New Content

Google’s discovers new websites/pages in a number of ways, although most pages are almost certainly discovered via web crawling/spidering.

Matt Cutts explains more about the crawling process in this video:

Here’s a practical demonstration of how Google uses crawling to discover new web pages:

Right now, Google has 554 pages from my blog in their index (hint: you can check the indexation status of your website with a site: search in Google).

I know my blog pretty well (obviously), so I know that 554 pages = pretty much all the pages on my blog.

Great, so that’s Google’s work done, right!?

Not so fast.

Google knows websites change all the time.

For example, you may periodically change the content on your “about us” page, or write a brand new blog post every few days.

Because of this, they have to constantly re-crawl websites/web pages to look for new content.

This is where internal links come in.

Google relies on internal links to discover new content, this works because whenever you add a new page/post to your website it’ll almost always be linked-to from somewhere on your website.

For example, whenever I publish a new blog post, a link to it automatically appears both on my main blog page and on the appropriate category page:

Because Google has already indexed my main blog page (and category pages), their crawler will follow that internal link to discover my latest blog post during their next re-crawl.

Like I said, most content management systems (e.g. WordPress) add internal links to new pages/posts automatically, but these aren’t always in the best location for SEO purposes.

This is why you need a smart internal linking strategy (more on this later!)

#2 – Internal Links Help Google To Rank (And Better Understand) Your Web Pages

It’s rumoured that the number of internal links pointing to a web page is one of Google’s 200+ ranking factors.

In fact:

Google themselves have stated that “the number of internal links pointing to a page is a signal to search engines about the relative importance of that page.”

Rumour confirmed, much!?

There have also been a number of case studies whereby a smart internal linking strategy has resulted in HUGE ranking boosts…

I’m talking about jumping from position #29 to #4.

And position #33 to #5.

All using nothing but smart internal linking.

But, why would this be a ranking factor?

Well, Google uses the number of internal links to a page to figure out how important that page may be.

For example, I link to my blog income reports from within my main navigation bar (which is present on every page of my website) — this tells Google that I deem this content to be of high importance.

And if I think this page is important, chances are that other people will, too.

It also passes more “link juice” to that page, meaning that it’ll be more authoritative in Google’s eyes.

Another important aspect of internal links is the anchor text used within the link(s). This helps Google to understand what that particular web page is about.

For example, in one of my income reports, I link to my SEMRush review with the anchor text “epic SEMRush review”.

In Google’s eyes, this helps reinforce what that page is about (i.e. a review of SEMRush) and helps them feel more confident about ranking it for SEMRush-related terms.

(that post actually ranks on the first page for the phrase “SEMRush review”)

In simple terms: the anchor text you use for internal links is almost certain a ranking factor.

And if you’re worried about being penalised by Google’s Penguin (4.0) algorithm for manipulating anchor text like this, don’t worry; Penguin is much more lenient when it comes to internal links.

#3 – Internal Links Help Make You More Money (Yes, Really!)

Internal links provide a navigational aid for real-life visitors to your website.

The links in your navigation menu provide perhaps the most obvious example of this — they funnel visitors to the most important pages on your website.

But this is also true for internal links within your content.

For example, I funnel visitors to my email marketing strategy using an internal link in this post.

But why do I do this?

Because it makes me more money.

Not only does my email marketing post provide a ton of value for my visitors (or, at least I hope it does!), it also contains affiliate links.

Strategically sending my traffic to this page results in more affiliate conversions and therefore, more money (ka-ching!)

Here are a few ways you can use internal links to make more money:

  • Funnel people towards high-converting pages
  • Funnel people towards pages with affiliate links
  • Funnel people towards relevant products/services

It’s also worth noting that the use of strategically placed internal links will help reduce bounce rate; this can have some SEO benefit and indirectly increase revenue.

Why?

Because Google probably uses a type of bounce rate as a ranking factor if people click back to the SERPs after visiting your site.

So while bounce rate is not a direct ranking metric (Google can’t know that for all traffic sources) it is an indicator towards people returning to the search results rather than engaging with your content.

A lower bounce rate may mean you rank higher and therefore lead to more organic traffic.

More traffic usually = more money.

3 Internal Link Building Strategies You Can Implement Today

OK, enough talk…

It’s time to build some strategic, rank boosting, revenue-increasing internal links.

Here are the 3 processes I’m going to walk you through:

  1. My quick ‘n’ dirty method.
  2. The manual method (hint: this is better than the quick ‘n’ dirty method, but is more time-consuming).
  3. BONUS: The power process (trying to rank a certain page? — you need this).

Let’s go through each one step-by-step.

#1— My Quick And Dirty Internal Linking Process

When it comes to SEO, time = money.

This is because the longer one task takes, the less time you have to spend on other important tasks (this is known as opportunity cost).

My 3-step quick ‘n’ dirty process can be implemented super-quickly, yet it still leads to incredible results.

Note: This method only works for WordPress-based websites.

Here’s the basic process:

  1. Create a list of URLs and primary target keywords
  2. Find the LSI keywords for each of those primary keywords
  3. Use the SEO Auto Linker plugin to add strategically-placed internal links in seconds.

Important: I’ve created a Google Sheet to make this process insanely straightforward. I recommend making a copy of it before you begin.

Let’s get started.

Step #1 — Gather A List Of URLs And Primary Keywords

Some of you will already have a list of URLs mapped to primary keywords.

If so, fantastic — paste them into the first tab of your Google Sheet (this is the one titled: “#1 — URLs / Keywords”) and jump straight to step #2.

If not, no worries, you can use either SEMRush (click here for a free 14-day trial) or URL Profiler (again, 14-day free trial available here) to export a list of keywords your web pages already rank for.

But first, you need to gather a list of URLs from your website.

If you have a sitemap (which you should), you can simply copy/paste the list of URLs from the sitemap into the sheet.

But, if not, here’s another super-quick way to do this:

Go to Google and search for the following:

site:yourdomain.com

This will return a list of all the pages on your website.

I also recommend setting the number of results per page to 100 under “search settings”, like this:

You can then use this free Chrome bookmarklet to scrape all 100 results from the SERPs.

Paste these into the URLs column in the Google Sheet.

Next, use the SEMRush or URL Profiler trials to extract the keywords each of these URLs currently rank for.

Here’s how to do this using each of these tools:

Go to the URL report (under Organic Research) in SEMRush.

Paste in one of the URLs from your Google Sheet (hint: it makes sense to start with the first one on the list!)

Click Search.

Scroll down and you should see a list of organic search keywords for that page.

Click Export.

Open the .csv in Excel, the copy/paste the list of keywords into this free tool — this will convert the list of keywords (which are exported into a single column) into a comma-separated list.

Copy the comma-separated list (on the right) into the “primary keywords” column in your Google Sheet.

Rinse and repeat for the rest of the URLs on your list.

How To Extract Keywords With URL Profiler

URL Profiler connects to Google Search Console to extract the keywords your website already ranks for.

Here’s how to do it:

Copy/paste your list of URLs into URL Profiler, then tick the “search analytics” checkbox.

Important: You MUST connect URL Profiler to Google Search Console for this to work. This can be done under Accounts on the menu bar.

Click Run Profiler.

URL Profiler should spit out a .csv showing all URLs and their corresponding keywords.

Annoyingly, these keywords are divided into multiple columns, so you’ll need to use this free tool to convert this into a comma-separated list.

Here’s how:

Copy all the keywords from the .csv for a particular URL.

Paste them into this tool.

Under Step 3: Choose output options, check the comma option under the options for Output Field Separator.

Copy/paste the comma-separated list of keywords into the Primary Keywords column in your Google Sheet.

Step #2 — Find The LSI Keywords For Your Primary Keywords

“LSI keywords” is really just a technical term form “related keywords”.

For example, if we take the keyword “product launch formula”, an LSI keyword could be “product launches” or “launching a product”.

Because you’ve already got a list of keywords for each of your URLs, finding LSI keywords should be a breeze.

Start by brainstorming related keywords. Add them to your spreadsheet.

Still, brainstorming will only get you so far, so here are a couple of other methods:

Copy one of the keywords from your Google Sheet and paste it into Google.

Scroll to the bottom of the results page and you should see a list of related searches.

Copy any relevant keywords into the LSI Keywords column in your Google Sheet (note: not all keywords will be relevant, so be picky!)

Rinse and repeat for the rest of the keywords (and for all the URLs) on your list.

How To Find LSI Keywords With LSIGraph.com

Go to LSIGraph.com and paste in a keyword from your spreadsheet.

Click Generate.

It should then kick back a bunch of LSI keywords.

Add any relevant ones to the LSI Keywords column in your spreadsheet.

Step #3 — Add These Keywords To Your Website With SEO Auto Linker

Good news: most of the hard work is done.

SEO Auto Linker will handle pretty much everything from here.

But, first things first, you need to install the plugin.

Once installed, go to the plugin page in your WP dashboard and click Add New Link.

Next, go back to your Google Sheet and select the tab labeled “#2 – For WP”.

This sheet pulls all of the keywords you entered into a neat list that you can then paste into WordPress.

All you have to do is select a URL from the dropdown.

Copy/paste the URL and all the keywords from the “COPY ME” column into SEO Auto Linker, like this:

Click Save.

SEO Auto Linker will comb through your website looking for occurrences of those keywords in other posts/pages. If it finds any, it’ll automagically add an anchored link to your specific blog post.

Note: I usually set the Links per Page option to 1, as I don’t want a ton of links on every page — that just looks spammy.

#2 — The (Better) Manual Internal Linking Process

SEO Auto Linker works well — the only issue is that you don’t have full control over exactly where these links are placed, as the plugin decides this for you.

In my opinion, it’s much better to do this manually.

That way, you can control exactly where the internal links are placed and ensure they make sense and attract clicks.

Here’s how to do it manually:

  1. Create a list of URLs and target keywords.
  2. Use Google to find relevant pages/posts on which to add internal links.
  3. Rinse and repeat whenever you publish new content.

I’m not going to go over gathering URLs and primary keywords again — simply use the methods laid out earlier in the post to do this.

However, I have created an alternate Google Sheet for this process, so I recommend making a copy of this and using it-

Next, you can use the site: search + target keyword command in Google to find all other pages (from your domain) that Google thinks are relevant to a particular topic.

I’m well-aware that performing this search correctly over and over again can be a bit of a hassle, so I’ve built this into the Google Sheet to make things super straightforward.

Go to the 2nd tab of the sheet named “#2 – For Google”, select the URL you’re building internal links to from the dropdown, then hit the “Click here” button.

This will take you straight to the Google search — no hassle!

Let’s assume I was looking to build some internal links to my 6-figure product launch formula.

I would select that URL in the spreadsheet (see above), open the Google search results, then pluck out any pages that would make sense to add internal links from.

Here’s a page that fits the bill:

So, it’s now simply a case of reading through the post and looking for appropriate places to internally link.

This looks like a good place:

Next, I simply login to my WP dashboard and add a link in that location.

Note: I only recommend adding 1 link per page, so when you’re done, head back to the SERPs and look for more internal linking opportunities.

Rinse and repeat this process for each page on your website.

Important tip: Do this process every time you publish a new blog post or web page on your website. Not only will this lead to Google indexing the page much quicker, it’ll also give it a much needed ranking boost.

#3 – BONUS: Power Process

Is there a particular page you want to rank above all others, yet it’s nowhere to be seen in the SERPs?

If so, you need my power process.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Find the most powerful pages on your website using Ahrefs (free 14-day free trial available here).
  2. Add internal links from these pages to your target web page.

That’s it.

Here’s how to do it:

Let’s say I wanted to boost rankings for my SERPed Ninja SEO Tools tutorial.

I would first need to find relevant, powerful pages on my website from which to add internal links from.

Ahrefs can help with this.

Go to Ahrefs Site Explorer and enter your domain (register for your 14-day free trial here).

Choose the “Best By Links” report from the “Pages” section on the left-hand menu.

This will show you a list of the most powerful pages on your website, ordered by # of referring domains (i.e. backlinks). In general, more backlinks = more power.

Look through this list and make a note of any pages that you could potentially add an internal link from. Make sure they’re relevant!

Right away, my comparison of backlink checkers stands out.

With 110 referring domains, it’s certainly powerful.

And, because SERPed actually pulls in data from some of the backlink checkers I mention on that page, this would be the perfect page from which to mention (and add a link to) my SERPed guide.

Looking at the page and scrolling down:

I think the conclusion would be the perfect place to add the link.

Why? Because I mention Majestic (i.e. one of the tools SERPed pulls data from).

I also talk about positives and negatives for each of the backlink checkers, so perhaps I could mention that SERPed kills two birds with one stone by pulling in data from more than one of these tools?

Adding a relevant internal link like this would give this page a huge boost.

But there’s no need to stop there; keep working your way down the list of top pages on Ahrefs — there may be other pages you can add an internal link from.

This will give the page even more of a boost!

Important: Just make sure to vary the anchor text between pages!

Wrapping It Up

Internal linking is crazily powerful — don’t neglect it!

Plus, unlike regular ol’ link building (from external websites), internal links are entirely under your full control.

You can decide where they’re placed, what anchor text they use and which pages they link to.

Given the fact that you can implement a smart internal linking strategy within a few hours, I strongly recommend you give this a shot right now.
